Agnosticity Volume 1 PDF Download. Download free ebook of Agnosticity Volume 1 in PDF format or read online by Raymond A. Hult 9781425197131 Published on 2007-02-16 by Trafford Publishing

Agnosticity is a new word created by the author with the hope that it will cause the reader to take a fresh look at how Agnostics think. Volume 1 reflects agnostic concerns surrounding Christian doctrine and is the first of a series intended to analyze the belief systems of major organized religions around the world. Christianity was chosen first because it accounts for the religious preference of about three of ever four American adults. Using his twenty-seven years as a Special Agent for the FBI as a springboard, the author draws on his experience in deductive reasoning to justify the agnostic point of view. This book is written so that the average person can easily understand the doubts that agnostics struggle with in trying to decide the existence of God. Instead of requiring a PhD. in religious studies, the author appeals to the common sense and rational thought that is inborn in most everyone. A primary goal of the author is to portray the Agnostic in a more favorable light and that there is nothing evil with admitting that a sure knowledge of God may not be so sure after all. Almost every page will result in readers re-evaluating their belief in God and the tenants of Christianity. Whether agreeing or disagreeing, the reader will never regard Christian dogma exactly the same way again.

The Atheist PDF Download. Download free ebook of The Atheist in PDF format or read online by Bryan F. Le Beau 9780814752852 Published on 2003-01-15 by NYU Press

In 1964, Life magazine called Madalyn Murray O’Hair “the most hated woman in America.” Another critic described her as “rude, impertinent, blasphemous, a destroyer not only of beliefs but of esteemed values.” In this first full-length biography, Bryan F. Le Beau offers a penetrating assessment of O’Hair’s beliefs and actions and a probing discussion of how she came to represent both what Americans hated in their enemies and feared in themselves. Born in 1919, O’Hair was a divorced mother of two children born out of wedlock. She launched a crusade against God, often using foul language as she became adept at shocking people and making effective use of the media in delivering her message. She first gained notoriety as one of the primary litigants in the 1963 case Murray v. Curlett which led the Supreme Court to ban school prayer. The decision stunned a nation engaged in fighting “godless Communism” and made O’Hair America’s most famous—and most despised—atheist. O’Hair led a colorful life, facing assault charges and extradition from Mexico, as well as the defection of her son William, who as an adult denounced her. She later served as Hustler publisher Larry Flynt’s chief speech writer in his bid for President of the United States. Drawing on original research, O’Hair’s diaries, and interviews, Le Beau traces her development from a child of the Depression to the dictatorial, abrasive woman who founded the American Atheists, wrote books denouncing religion, and challenged the words “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, “In God We Trust” on American currency, the tax exempt status of religious organizations, and other activities she saw as violating the separation of church and state. O’Hair remained a spokesperson for atheism until 1995, when she and her son and granddaughter vanished. It was later discovered that they were murdered by O’Hair’s former office manager and an accomplice. Fast-paced, engagingly written, and sharply relevant to ongoing debates about school prayer and other religious issues, The Atheist tells the colorful life-story of a woman who challenged America’s most deeply held beliefs.

Buddhism and Transgression PDF Download. Download free ebook of Buddhism and Transgression in PDF format or read online by Adrian Konik 9789004178755 Published on 2009 by BRILL

If Buddhism is to remain relevant to the contemporary era, through providing effective solutions to the proliferating and protean discursive problems encountered by its present-day practitioners, it cannot continue to ignore the role of discourse in the formation of subjectivity. In the interest of problematizing such ignorance, this book explores the potential interface between Foucaultian discourse analysis and the development of an indigenous rationale for the practice of contemporary Western Buddhism, along with the growing significance of such a rationale for traditional Buddhism in an era dominated by disciplinary/bio-power. Through doing so, this book radically re-conceptualizes the role of Buddhism in the world today by linking Buddhist practice with acts of discursive transgression.

Atheism is a social phenomenon that has existed for quite some time. It presents itself as the antithesis of theism. The version we see today stems from affluent Europeans during the so-called 'Enlightenment' period. This atheistic propaganda comes across as chic and convincing despite being based on misconceptions and fallacious conclusions. In this book, atheism is dissected, scrutinized and exposed as being irrational, without substance and 'stupid' by the author who has personal experience with atheism. Readers who believe in God will benefit from the dismantling of atheistic fallacies and misconceptions while objective atheists will question their own atheism.

Great journeys often start with a single question. For D. K. Evans, a newly married professional in the Christian-dominated South, that question was, |Why Do I Believe in God?| That simple query led him on a years-long search to better understand the nature of religion and faith, particularly as it applies to the Black community. While many taking such a journey today might immerse themselves in the writing of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens, Evans took inspiration not only from John Henrik Clarke, Yosef-Ben Jochannan, Hubert Harrison, and John G. Jackson, champions of a rich Black tradition of challenging religious orthodoxy, but also from many others in his own community who had similarly come to question their core religious beliefs. While this journey eventually led him to discount the notion of God, he calls on all to ask their own questions, particularly those within the Black community who act on blind faith. While their own journey might not lead to his truth, he acknowledges, that is the only way they will ever emancipate themselves from the truths thrust on them by others and arrive at their most important truth—their own.

Atheism PDF Download. Download free ebook of Atheism in PDF format or read online by Julian Baggini 9781402768828 Published on 2009-10-01 by Sterling Publishing Company, Inc.

Is a life without religion one without values or purpose? Julian Baggini emphatically says no. He sets out to dispel the myths surrounding atheism and to show how it can be both a meaningful and moral choice. He directly confronts the failure of officially atheist states in the twentieth century, and presents an intellectual case for atheism that rests as much on reasoned and positive arguments for its truth as on negative arguments against religion.

Current debate about religion seems to be going nowhere. Atheists persist with their arguments, many plausible and some unanswerable, but they make no impact on believers. Defenders of religion find atheists equally unwilling to cede ground. Noting that religion is not what atheists think it is, Tim Crane offers a way out of this stalemate.

Excerpt from Why I Am Not an Agnostic There never has been a period in the history of human thought when the deep questions of life were so fully and universally discussed. With all our progress in this direction, we have not yet created any new moral obligations. No amendments have been offered to the moral law, nor have any been necessary to bring it down to date. With all the Mistakes of Moses those who have attempted to point them out have failed to improve on his laws, disprove his account of Creation, super sede him, or suppress his in uence. While others affect an air, of knowing all with respect to nature and man, they have not answered the questions of life as old as Job, nor brought any new ones to the forum of public discussion relating to man's origin, nature and destiny. Neither have we been furnished with a satisfactory answer to these questions from their standpoint. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1891. Carus, an independent philosopher who studied and published on Eastern and Western philosophy, was instrumental in raising Western awareness of Buddhism at the turn of the century. Carus writes in the Preface that: The view here presented, in spite of all our differences with Kant, may be considered as the natural outcome of Kant's philosophy. The view here presented unites two qualities which may appear contradictory at first sight. It is radical, and at the same time conservative...and, Our fundamental conceptions of world and life, therefore, for practical purposes, for our individual welfare, for the destiny of our nation and for that of humanity, are of greatest importance. On the philosophy of our age depends the health of our religious, our scientific, our industrial, our mercantile, our political and our social development. Reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism PDF Download. Download free ebook of Reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism in PDF format or read online by Ruth Gamble 9780190690786 Published on 2018-07-09 by Oxford University Press

Reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism examines how the third Karmapa hierarch, Rangjung Dorjé (1284-1339) transformed reincarnation from a belief into a lasting Tibetan institution. Born the son of an itinerant, low-caste potter, Rangjung Dorjé went on to become a foundational figure in Tibetan Buddhism and a teacher of the last Mongolian emperor. He became renowned for his contributions to Buddhist philosophy, literature, astrology, medicine, architecture, sacred geography and manuscript production. But, as Ruth Gamble demonstrates, his most important legacy was the transformation of the Karmapa reincarnation lineage to ensure that, after his death, subsequent Karmapas were able to assume power in the religious institutions he had led. The inheritance model of reincarnation instituted by Rangjung Dorjé changed the Tibetan Plateau's power relations, which until that time had been based on family associations, and created a precedent for later reincarnate institutions, including that of the Dalai Lamas. Drawing on Rangjung Dorjé's hitherto un-translated autobiographies and autobiographical songs, this book shows that his reinvention of reincarnation was a self-conscious and multi-faceted project, made possible by Rangjung Dorjé's cultural, social, and political standing and specific historical and geographical circumstances. Exploring this combination of agency and historical coincidence, this is the first full-length study of the development of the reincarnation institution.

Buddhism and Science is a compilation of a few learned articles on the subject. The book co-ordinates modern scientific thought with the Buddha Dharma and how the revolutionary theories of Charles Darwin and others blend with the Dharma (Buddha`s Teachings). It recognizes that the world, or even the mughty universe was not created by a god rather it is a steady state of the universe with no beginning and end. The work has shown how the Buddhist philosophy of Anicca (impermanence), Dukkha (suffering), and Anatta (ego-lessness) blends with modern science, with remarkable clarity. It also states that atomic science and Buddhism seem to be entirely different, yet they are tackling the same problem of energy and releasing of energy, breaking the highly concentrated form of energy, the so-called atom, in the one case, and ego, in the other.

Village Atheists PDF Download. Download free ebook of Village Atheists in PDF format or read online by Leigh Eric Schmidt 9781400884346 Published on 2016-09-26 by Princeton University Press

A much-maligned minority throughout American history, atheists have been cast as a threat to the nation's moral fabric, barred from holding public office, and branded as irreligious misfits in a nation chosen by God. Yet, village atheists—as these godless freethinkers came to be known by the close of the nineteenth century—were also hailed for their gutsy dissent from stultifying pieties and for posing a necessary secularist challenge to majoritarian entanglements of church and state. Village Atheists explores the complex cultural terrain that unbelievers have long had to navigate in their fight to secure equal rights and liberties in American public life. Leigh Eric Schmidt rebuilds the history of American secularism from the ground up, giving flesh and blood to these outspoken infidels, including itinerant lecturer Samuel Porter Putnam; rough-edged cartoonist Watson Heston; convicted blasphemer Charles B. Reynolds; and atheist sex reformer Elmina D. Slenker. He describes their everyday confrontations with devout neighbors and evangelical ministers, their strained efforts at civility alongside their urge to ridicule and offend their Christian compatriots. Schmidt examines the multilayered world of social exclusion, legal jeopardy, yet also civic acceptance in which American atheists and secularists lived. He shows how it was only in the middle decades of the twentieth century that nonbelievers attained a measure of legal vindication, yet even then they often found themselves marginalized on the edges of a God-trusting, Bible-believing nation. Village Atheists reveals how the secularist vision for the United States proved to be anything but triumphant and age-defining for a country where faith and citizenship were—and still are—routinely interwoven.
