This is a semiotic study of a corpus of texts that Kumārajīva (344-413 CE), Paramārtha (499-569 CE) and Xuánzàng (599-664 CE) transmitted from India to China more than thirteen centuries ago. Many of the works studied here are mentioned in historical and general introductory books, but the philosophical arguments and the principle of coherence underlying these texts are unduly understudied and have remained unknown to the general scholarly public. The first five chapters discuss the semiotic themes in the Buddhist systems of Sarvāstivāda, Sautrāntika, Madhyamaka and Vijñānavāda. The last chapter explores the critical potential of Buddhist semiotic thought by applying a semiotic model encountered in the Madhyamaka and Vijñānavāda systems to a study of Jacques Derrida's deconstruction of Western metaphysics. Each chapter is a work of textual criticism. The main argument of the book is that Mahāyāna Buddhist philosophical systems and Derridean deconstruction converge in making the notion of the Same thematic in their separate texts. In the Buddhist systems, the notion of thematic of the Same is invoked in a critique of naive realism and various types of metaphysics. In Derridean texts, the notion of the Same informs the deconstruction of the old metaphysics and modernist anti-metaphysical critiques. Both inthe Buddhist doctrine of emptiness and in Derridean deconstruction, the notion of the Same informs an etiological and semiotic enquiry. And yet, Buddhist systems and Derridean deconstruction do not copy each other by saying the same thing. They either deploy the notion in different critical projects or explore different levels of the notion. Thus, although each chapter of the book can be read as a self-contained article, the whole book develops the idea of the Same progressively as new sets of texts are introduced and analysed.--Book jacket.
